Pixar has officially confirmed that Toy Story 5 is in development, with plans for a release in the near future. The announcement marks the return of the beloved franchise after years of fan speculation and anticipation.
Pixar and Disney announced on March 2024 that Toy Story 5 is officially in production. The company did not specify a release date but indicated that the film is in early development stages. The announcement was made through a joint statement from Pixar and Disney, emphasizing their commitment to expanding the Toy Story universe.
Details about the storyline, cast, or creative team have not been disclosed. However, sources close to Pixar suggest that the film will explore new characters while continuing the stories of Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and other familiar characters. The franchise has been dormant since Toy Story 4, released in 2019, which concluded with a satisfying ending for many fans.
Why Pixar’s Toy Story 5 Announcement Matters for Fans
The confirmation of Toy Story 5 is significant because it signals Pixar’s ongoing investment in the franchise, which has been a cornerstone of animated cinema since 1995. The Toy Story series has been critically acclaimed and commercially successful, influencing the animation industry and popular culture. Fans have long speculated about a continuation, and this announcement provides clarity that the franchise will continue to evolve.
For Disney and Pixar, the development of Toy Story 5 represents a strategic move to maintain their leadership in animated features and capitalize on the franchise’s enduring popularity. The film’s release could also impact box office revenues and merchandise sales, reaffirming the franchise’s cultural relevance.

Toy Story Franchise’s Evolution and Previous Films
The Toy Story franchise began with the original film in 1995, directed by John Lasseter, which revolutionized computer-animated films. It was followed by Toy Story 2 (1999), Toy Story 3 (2010), and Toy Story 4 (2019). Each installment has been critically acclaimed and has grossed over a billion dollars worldwide.
After Toy Story 4, many fans and industry observers wondered if Pixar would produce a fifth film, especially given the film’s closure for many characters. The 2019 movie ended with Woody choosing to stay with Bo Peep and Woody’s farewell to Buzz, leaving open the question of what a subsequent film might explore. The official announcement now confirms that development is underway, but specific story details remain undisclosed.
