A Space Echo For The 21st Century
It is no secret that BABY Audio is obsessed with the quirks, sounds, and simplicity of vintage analog gear. With every software product, Baby Audio makes, they hope to offer a little bit of that same hands-on experience and instant gratification. Never by emulating the past — but by tapping into its spirit to invent something new.
With Spaced Out, Baby Audio asked this: How would Baby Audio design a “Space Echo” effect today, almost 50 years after the original, with the abundance of computer power and algorithmic complexity at Baby Audio disposal?
Baby Audio set out to create an effect as fun, flavored, and futuristic for the 21st century as the Space Echo was for its own time. It’s been an epic journey and they are proud to have returned with Baby Audio’s most complex plugin to date.

Magic Switch
The Vintage Junos of the 1980s had a one-button chorus effect that was modeled after the classic Juno “one-button” chorus effects. Dark and out of tune, excellent for creating dimension, color, and depth to digital songs. To adjust the color, use the mix slider. The technology inside BABY Audio’s Super VHS 80s retro color plugin is utilized.
The Juno-chorus isn’t a complete copy of the original, but rather our own vision of the ideal one-button chorus for today’s DAW world, where clean sounds are simple to come by yet genuine color is difficult to achieve. The BABY Audio Super VHS plugin was used as a source for the Beautifully Detuned, Rich and Moody Filter in the Vintage Modulation section of the Viola presets. It’s gone farther than the Juno chorus in terms of vintage modulation.
BABY Audio is pleased to provide its items to the mobile music-making community. In 2021 alone, the downloads for Magic Switch and Magic Dice in their original desktop form numbered in the hundreds of thousands. Because of the high rate of popularity in comparison to other Baby Audio plug-ins, this distinction has made them the most utilized baby audio plugins ever.
You can find both plugins in the App Store:

Introducing TAIP: An Analog Recording Plugin That Will Add Some Heat to Your Music
You know how you love the sound of analog tape recordings, but wish that it was easier to work with them? Well, now you can. Introducing TAIP: an AI-powered plugin that will bring some heat to your music without the need for routing any audio outside your DAW.
It’s not just about simulation; this is a digital plugin designed to emulate the properties of analog recording in order to give you authentic sounding results in minutes!
Do you love the sound of analog tape?
There are a lot of cool ways to make your music sound vintage and old-fashioned without having to go through the hassle of buying an actual reel-to-reel tape machine.
DAWs are made to mix and produce music
Along with being able to process sounds, DAWs are also used to mix and produce music. Recording engineers will use these programs in order to record the different sound waves that come together to create a song. They can then share these different waves with other musicians in order for them to work on the song’s final product.
DAWs are made to mix and produce music, not be instruments. They’re usually sterile with little life-force behind them, but if you want some authenticity then look no further than the TAIP plugin!
It will bring in that rich analog sound without having to route anything outside of your DAW’s interface – just dial-up how much warmth/characteristics (or whatever term best suits)you desire for each instrument or group within your project using our handy sliders on-screen one before applying any effects chains too…and there ya go!.
And don’t worry if you have a less powerful computer or DAW, because TAIP is compatible with any mix of Windows and Mac OSX!
Switch between three backgrounds (Black / Gray / White)
Create a custom ‘tape flavor’ for any need
It’s a simple plugin to use but will add so much warmth to your tracks; simply dial-up how much ‘analog’ sound/characteristics (or whatever word best suits)you desire for each instrument or group within your project using the handy sliders on-screen one before applying any effects chains too…and there ya go!.
There are a lot of cool ways to make your music sound vintage and old-fashioned without having to go through the hassle of buying an actual reel-to-reel tape machine. One way is using plugins!
Add musical saturation and glue to drums, instruments, vocals
The world’s first Tape plugin was developed at Baby Audio by combining their tried and true algorithm design with DSP techniques used in modern-day production software.
With a product line that spans from vintage emulations to cutting-edge digital audio plugins, Baby Audio is ready for anything. Baby Audio is not just about you keeping the old sound alive – they also want their users’ music to sound new and fresh!
AI-powered algorithm
AI is a complicated – and sometimes misunderstood – term. For some, it’s a futuristic buzzword that gets thrown around at every opportunity. But the truth is that artificial intelligence has been playing an important role in our lives for decades now – from powering voice assistants to recognizing objects with your smartphone camera! It all comes down to how these AI algorithms learn and process information as they go through their normal routines of performing various tasks.
In terms of music production, this means that TAIP can learn what different types of tape styles sound like and emulate them in a digital plugin environment! AI offers an alternative – and in our opinion more faithful – approach over the traditional DSP method. You can use AI to quickly experiment with different tape styles and find the best one suited for your project.
Why not use a DSP?
Tape plugin emulation powered by artificial intelligence, TAIP is a great option if you’re looking for an alternative way of achieving that classic analog sound without having to spend time in front of a mixing desk! It’s compatible with any mix, so there’s no limit to your potential music production!
As I see it, there are two main ways to emulate the sound of an analog component. The first is through DSP (digital signal processing) which entails “guessing” what effect various components would have on one another and their mutual dependencies.
A new kind of artificial intelligence can accurately decipher the sonic qualities that make a tape machine sound and behave in the way it does.
The AI’s ability
The AI’s ability is created by using neural networks, which are computer programs based on mathematics equations for determining how neurons or groups of them interact with one another at different rates depending on what input they receive – similar to how nerve impulses travel through your body when you move an arm up versus down.
This is what we call the “digital ears” because they’re able to hear things that humans can’t. The algorithm listens through your audio and identifies certain features, like changes in pitch or loudness for instance; then it gives you back a list of those differences as well as where else those sounds might be coming from so people know exactly why something sounded off when tuning into an unfamiliar channel.
An AI-powered algorithm can accurately decipher the sonic qualities that make a tape machine sound and behave in the way it does. AI will emulate the sound of every single component that makes up your tape machine.
The AI listens and learns how to turn on the difference between a man’s voice, a woman’s voice. If we apply these differences in new audio files then it will be able to create beautiful remixes for listeners everywhere!
Analog saturation
With analog equipment, especially those from before digital recording was invented, everything is done by hand – so you see people physically moving faders or sliding sliders to create all this warmth and color as they go along. And while some mixers and outboard equipment can do the same thing, it’s not really a viable option for most people.
AI-powered algorithm emulates the sound of every single component that makes up your tape machine using pure math and physics equations to determine how everything would interact with one another. This is why AI works in such different ways than traditional DSP methods.

Smooth Operator – BABY Audio’s New Intelligent Signal Balancer
Smooth Operator – BABY Audio – New Plugin
If there’s one thing BABY Audio aims for as a company, it is to join the purity of traditional gear with the latest technology possible in the software domain. With Smooth Operator, BABY Audio taken a stab at one of the most exciting and complex new technologies in audio – Spectral Processing.
Smooth Operator works by decreasing frequencies through a spectral compression method. The plugin automatically recognizes the frequencies it needs to clamp down on the hardest – therein lies the “intelligent” part. As a user, you just need to tell Smooth Operator how much you want it to do – by shifting the curve down. Further down means more processing. Additionally, you can form the response curve to go harder or lighter on particular frequencies.
Spectral Processing
The easiest way to understand Spectral Processing is to think of it as manipulating the building blocks that make up a digital signal – rather than the actual signal. The used algorithm uses Fast Fourier Transform – or FFT – to break the incoming audio into tiny particles, which are analyzed and processed separately, before being put back together again. This all happens in real-time and allows for a much more surgical approach to resonance detection and rebalancing than what would be possible with traditional audio effects.
While some other spectral tools focus on audio restoration, Smooth Operator is all about artistic creation. The plugin is meant for shaping the tone to make it your tone. Use it to compress, EQ, and ‘purify’ in one simple process – and know that Smooth Operator has your back when it comes to automatically eliminate artifacts.
Smooth Operator Features
- Brings out clarity and smoothness across instruments, vocals and mix busses.
- Allows for creative tone shaping without artifacts or harsh resonances.
- Intelligent algorithm that automatically detects and resolves fatigued frequencies.
- An alternative to EQ, compression and resonance suppression in one unified workflow.
Introducing clarity on demand.
Smooth Operator combines equalization, spectral compression and resonance suppression into a singular creative experience that’s instant and intuitive. Use it to perfect your tonal balance and add a touch of ‘HiFi’.
Our spectral detection algorithm adapts to your audio 44,100 times per second and automatically eliminates fatigued frequencies. This gives you full control to shape your signal and bring out more definition.
Workflow
1- Pull the middle circle down to increase the effect level. Smooth Operator automatically attacks the most dominant/fatigued frequencies first, even with a straight curve. You may not need to do more than this.
2- Move the 4 outer nodes to shape the tonal response. Preserve frequency areas by moving the nodes up, or remove frequency content by pulling them down. Use your mousewheel or trackpad-scroll to adjust the Q.
3- FOCUS controls how surgical Smooth Operator gets. At 100%, each frequency spike is processed independently. Lower focus values will give you a broader, more balanced, response.
4- Engage SOLO to audition different parts of the frequency spectrum separately during node hover-over.
5- Engage SIDE CHAIN mode to duck your signal with the frequency balance of another track in your mix. This feature could have been a plugin in its own right(!) It allows you to create a hyper-surgical side chain effect where the exact frequency make-up of a lead track can be used for ducking a secondary track.
Presets
Smooth Operator comes loaded with 63 presets created by friends of BABY Audio
- Preston Reid (Ciara, Toni Braxton, Lil Uzi Vert)
- David Nakaji (Post Malone, Aminé, Lil Eazzyy)
- Rob Kleiner (David Guetta, Sia, Britney Spears, Giorgio Moroder)
