Make Noise New Semi-Modular Strega

Make Noise’s new Strega module is the perfect way to add a touch of creativity and modulation to your Eurorack modular synth setup. With seven sources and thirteen destinations, this little powerhouse offers a wealth of possibilities for experimentation. And thanks to its rugged steel enclosure and small form factor, it’s perfect for on-the-go musicians.

Make Noise is a new instrument created in conjunction with Alessandro Cortini. Strega represents the seen and unseen, the sign and magic, the alchemy of sound, inspired by Cortini’s music and sonic experiments.

The Strega is an audio alchemical experiment. Turn it on! Pour the tonic into time and watch it pass through the filter over time to hear the results.

The mix is controlled by the Tonic, which adjusts the oscillator pitch, filter cutoff frequency, and dead center delay duration. The Time control allows you to go from short, almost slapback repeats to the nearly uncontrolled cacophony, when the clock noise from running the delay chip slower than planned overwhelms the sound of the oscillator.

The Make Noise Strega

The Make Noise Strega is a voltage-controlled oscillator designed to create rich and harmonic sounds. The oscillator has two outputs, each with its own set of controls, that allow for a variety of modulation options. The module also features an attenuverter for precise control over the amplitude of the signal.

The monophonic oscillator, on the other hand, isn’t the show. The Strega’s soul isn’t in its sound generator, unlike other synths. Instead, the character is derived from a multimode filter and a low-fidelity delay.

When you compare the controls to the overall design, it’s easy to see why there was such a long wait. There are three knobs that are larger than the others.

Alessandro Cortini

Strega is a synthesizer designed in collaboration with Alessandro Cortini. Strega encapsulates the visual and unseen, the sign and magic, the alchemy of sound, inspired by Cortini’s music and sonic experiments.

Strega was birthed from a personal need or the artistic connection Alessandro has with Make Noise and the crew. The two are so interwoven.

The most essential thing is that it no longer functions as a collection of concepts, but rather as the tool you presently possess in your hands… an instrument that epitomizes the sonic aesthetic that is so close to Alessandro.

The Strega may be used to produce audio tones, generate control signals, and analyze external noises. Connect the 0-COAST or any other line-level source into the Strega to discover new sounds!

This new instrument takes the same form factor as the 0-COAST and 0-CTRL. It was designed to be controlled by the 0-CTRL or the 0-COAST’s MIDI-CV B outputs and is equally happy interfacing with Eurorack modules as well.

Easy-To-Use Semi-Modular

The Make Noise Strega is a great choice for anyone looking for an easy-to-use and versatile oscillator. It’s perfect for creating drones, pads, and other textural sounds.

The Strega feels like a drone instrument, but it’s capable of much more. The transition from drones to monophonic pad sounds, for example, isn’t very substantial.

The module is also great for adding movement and texture to rhythmic patterns. With its wide range of controls, the Make Noise Strega offers a lot of flexibility and sonic possibilities.

Make Noise’s Strega touch bridges and gateways are perfect for momentary modulation routings. With seven sources and thirteen destinations, it’s easy to create rich and complex sounds. Plus, the Eurorack compatibility means you can use it with your existing modular synthesizer setup. And like all Make Noise products, it includes patch cables, an output cable, and an AC adapter.

Strega is able to conjure audio tones, generate control signals, and process external sounds.  This new instrument takes the same form factor as the 0-COAST and 0-CTRL in a rugged steel enclosure.

Strega was designed to be controlled by the 0-CTRL or the 0-COAST’s MIDI-CV B outputs and is equally happy interfacing with Eurorack modules as well. If you connect the gate out of a sequencer or keyboard to the Begin and End on the Agitation circuit, then route it to the Activation, you’ll have an amp envelope with a long attack and release times that any good pad requires.

Strega is patchable, with 7 sources and 13 destinations.  The instrument also includes Touch Bridges and Gateways for momentary modulation routings, and both Line Level and Eurorack Level outputs.

If you give the tone-setting to the appropriate place, you can even get some basic synth string and organ sounds. Now of course pads, strings, and organs all require polyphony, but you may fake it with the delay’s decay cranked all the way up.

Conclusion

Make Noise has released a new semi-modular synthesizer called Strega. This instrument was designed in collaboration with Alessandro Cortini and takes the same form factor as the 0-COAST and 0-CTRL. It is able to generate audio tones, control signals, and process external sounds.

If you’re looking for a great-sounding and versatile oscillator, the Make Noise Strega is definitely worth checking out. It’s capable of creating some amazing sounds that will add interest and texture to your music. With its two outputs and wide range of controls, the module is sure to inspire your creativity.

There is no keyboard, sequencer, or MIDI. Strega will make beautiful sounds and murmuring drones right out of the box. You don’t want to use a piano on its own, because it’d sound too melodic. Make Noise’s desktop sequencer, the 0-CTRL is an obvious match.

The Strega’s major disadvantage is its high price. Although the cost isn’t overly prohibitive, it may be a touch excessive when you consider the machine’s somewhat restricted functionality.

The Make Noise Strega is a Eurorack modular synthesizer signal touch bridge and gateway that’s patchable with 7 sources and 13 destinations. It’s compatible with Eurorack modular synthesizer signals, includes patch cables, an output cable, and an AC adapter, has a headphone and line-level amplifier as well as Eurorack outputs, and is housed in a small rugged steel enclosure with the same form factor as the Make Noise 0-Coast and 0-CTRL.

Hello everyone. We’ve been on a Budhist retreat in a cave on the dark side of the Moon for the last two years and literally just returned to Earth today. Did we miss anything whilst we were gone? Anything exciting happen?

Signal Sounds Roundup May 2022

Now that we’re back, fully enlightened and settled in again we’ll endevour to make these mails more regular, keeping it short and sweet and hopefully giving you the best new synths and modules and a few interesting titbits we’ve seen on our travels over the internetz.

Superbooth

Superbooth22
Signal Sounds Roundup May 2022 74

Superbooth is the primary source of excitement in the modular and synth world at the moment, taking place in Berlin on Thursday 12th May through to Saturday.  Both myself and Aleks will be bothering every one of the 100+ companies exhibiting there to get the lowdown on what new delights they have for us.  We’ll do a round up afterwards but the best place to see regular updates would be on our Instagram page.

Ben DivKid

Ben DivKid
Signal Sounds Roundup May 2022 75

Ben DivKid continued his mission to bring interesting and affordable modules to the world,  His last was with Stead State Fate (the wildly successful RNDStep) and this time around he returns to his first partners, Befacco, to bring us the Stereo Strip.

It’s outrageously good value given that some companies charge more than £200 just for an Audio In and Out module – this one offers that feature (Eurorack or standard Line level, separately selectable for both in and out) PLUS a very high quality Stereo panner and EQ circuit.  It’s very funky and not very chunky given that it’s only 6hp.  The usual high quality video from Ben (above) is here if you need more convincing.

Look Mum No Computer

Look Mum No Computer
Signal Sounds Roundup May 2022 76

Look Mum No Computer has been a big figure on YouTube for a long time now and has a repuation for unusual large format 5U modular synths but has now taken those designs and succesfully transplanted them into Eurorack format.  The first (of many) module is an all analogue Oscialltor with built in visual Tuner (something rarely seen and since the demise of TipTop’s Z3000…almost impossible to find) and other performance oriented features like Octave Switches.  Almost sold out already, move quick if you need to get one.

Non Eurorack Stuff

Oberheim
Signal Sounds Roundup May 2022 77

Non Eurorack Stuff – still lots of interesting stuff happening outside of your rack, look out for some really, really good stuff from Polyend, Moog and Korg in particular and of course the new Dave Smith/Oberheim release, the OB-B8 which we’ll be elbowing people out of the way to get a shot of at the show.

Signal Sounds Roundup May 2022 78

Signal Sounds Shop – if you’ve communicated with us over email in the last year you’ll have heard us moan about how long it’s taken to get the new place fully up and running after out move, however…..we have some final touches being applied to the showroom next week and after that we’ll be in a much better place to make a really inviting and comfortable place to enjoy synths and geek out in. There’s all the Eurorack you can eat plus a cross section of vintage synths, drum machines, mixers and effects to mess with. And a Beer Fridge.

New and Updated Stock

Just a few bits that are in stock now that are worth mentioning

Transit – The All-Analog Stereo Signal Processor with Dual Mono Channel Lanes and Ducking Input

Eurorack Module Transit

The Eurorack module Transit is a versatile tool for processing audio signals. It features two audio stereo (dual mono) channel lanes with an all-analog signal path. Each stereo channel lane has its own input gain control, mute button, and ducking input.

Ducking Input

The Ducking input on each channel operates like traditional side-chaining on a compressor where an input signal, CV, or Trigger input (i.e. LFO, Clock, Gate) modulates the gain reduction of the audio. This allows the Transit to be used for a wide range of applications, from simple level attenuation to complex audio processing.

Dedicated Output Section

In addition, the Transit includes a dedicated output section with level controls and an output mixer. This gives the user complete control over the processed signal, making the Transit an ideal solution for anyone looking for a high-quality audio processing tool.

Transit offers two different audio output options, each controlled by its own volume knob. The main stereo output is perfect for speakers or other external sound systems, while the 3.5mm headphone output is ideal for personal listening.

The headphone output is located on the front of the Transit for easy access, and the level control knob allows you to adjust the volume to your preferences.

Connect to the World and Eurorack Case

The Transit comes equipped with everything you need to get started making great-sounding music right away. Its all-analog signal path starts with a 3.5mm headphone jack, which has its own independent volume control knob.

From there, the signal travels to left and right stereo output, where it is controlled by a MASTER volume knob.

The Transit also features a built-in metronome, which is perfect for helping you keep time while you practice or play.

Controlled LEDs

The level of each stereo channel is indicated by LEDs that can be controlled digitally. The LEDs will illuminate in white, blue, or pink to show the level. When the mute is engaged, the LEDs will turn red.

There are also LEDs for the master and headphone levels that use the same color scheme. This allows for easy level indication without having to look at the actual levels. The colors make it easy to see at a glance which channels are muted or at what level they are set.

Transit logo blk
Transit – The All-Analog Stereo Signal Processor with Dual Mono Channel Lanes and Ducking Input

As anyone who’s ever dealt with a finicky sound system knows, level indicators are essential for getting the perfect sound. That’s why the Transit is equipped with digitally-controlled LEDs (Light-Emitting Diodes) for each stereo channel lane. The LEDs use a white, blue, and pink color scheme to indicate level, making it easy to get the perfect sound.

And if you need to mute the sound completely, the Transit has you covered there too. The CH1 MUTE and/or CH2 MUTE buttons illuminate in red, so you can be sure that the sound is completely off. Meanwhile, MASTER and PHONES levels also have their own LEDs for level indication.
