The Spellbook – A Modulation Device Inspired By Sacred Geometry

The Spellbook is a Max for Live device inspired by sacred geometry. It converts esoteric symbols into LFO signals, enabling you to weave the fabric of nature into your projects.

Spellbook outputs 8 mappable modulation signals based on the X/Y position of a dot moving along the lines of the chosen shape. Each output can be assigned to two parameters, increasing its potential outputs to 16. We have enabled automation for most parameters, making advanced internal and external modulations possible. With some settings, these can go quite far into the audio rate.

The device reads the position of a moving dot that travels along the lines of a carefully selected assemblage of geometric shapes. This is then split into eight separate outputs, each with their individual set of settings such as x/y axis, phase shift, uni- or bipolar analysis, speed multiplication, and division, offset, range, and more.

Most parameters within the device are automatable, enabling complex internal modulations. For further increased complexity, each of the eight outputs can be mapped to two parameters, effectively unlocking up to 16 outputs.

The Spellbook Features

  • Seven sacred shapes to control your project or outboard gear
  • Advanced internal and external modulations
  • Innovative LFO sourcing and manipulation
  • Eight outputs which can be split into 16
  • Individual speed multipliers for each output
  • Synced or free-running master clock
  • Settings that go far into audio rate
  • Lightweight performance
  • Intuitive workflow

For The Spellbook, Hypnus Records had a completely original idea for a device but no way of building it themselves. As it had a core aim of modulation, introductions were made to Sebastian of Chaos Culture the developer behind Modulat. The idea is to weave sacred geometry into your projects in a quick, lightweight, and inspiring way.

Hypnus Records deliberately scaled down on wilder functionality in order to keep it easy to use and true to its sacred core. It’s not intended to compete with traditional modulation devices but rather offer a limited, quick, and unique way of getting esoteric modulations into your projects. ⁣

About Hypnus Records

Ever since the birth of consciousness, there has been reverence of the unknown. We have always sought to understand what hides behind the curtain of our perceptive limitations by means of emotional exploration, observance of nature, and ritualistic techniques of ecstasy.    Using nothing but our minds and a beat, we may enter a state that lies beyond our ordinary reality as we slither between inner dimensions not explainable by the words of man. Instead, we’ve been communicating our experiences through mythical lore, esoteric doctrine, and symbolism which jolts us into this wordless state of illumination.    Today, in the era of modern sound design, we’re able to shape sounds in ways not previously conceivable in the history of our consciousness. This is why the adepts of Hypnus have gathered; to evoke sonic landscapes that utilize our wonderful imaginary ability and to equip the receiver with a lush bouquet of perceptive assets. With this, we hope to aid the pursuit of stretching our conscious limits while connecting us all to each other and nature in the process.  – hypnus records

Version 1.1 Feature Updates

Module Reset & Randomization

  • Press Reset to reset the module to the default settings
  • Press Randomize to randomize the module parameters

The randomization is done with unique algorithms for each module instead of true randomness, in order to increase the chances of a useful outcome. Volume controls are limited and filter cutoff frequencies are randomized in relation to each other to avoid pointless settings that would result in silence or sudden volume spikes.

Quantize Snapshot Recall

Added the ability to quantize snapshot recalling. This quantization works exactly how the quantization of the Looper does. If you recall a snapshot right on the beat or slightly after, it still counts as being “in time”. This helps with the performative use of snapshot recall without having to focus on triggering it perfectly before the beat.

MIDI Trigger Snapshot Recall

(Live 11 only) Snapshots can now also be recalled via MIDI input for live performance use. Route any of Live’s MIDI track outputs to the MIDI input of the MIDI track hosting The Percolator device. MIDI note C3 will recall the first snapshot and consecutive notes above will trigger higher snapshot numbers. It’s suggested to not quantize snapshot recalling if the incoming MIDI data is already quantized.

  • Updated The Percolator UI background colors.
  • The title of the floating window now displays the device and track name, which updates automatically after renaming.
  • Minor bugfixes for all GUI elements and the overall device from updating the underlying framework to the latest version.
