Stutter Edit 2 – Inspired by BT

The legacy Stutter Edit was the first audio plug-in that automated the “micro-edit”, or the process of slicing and dicing audio into small chunks and arranging them in a different rhythm to create a new sonic idea.

Why Upgrade to Stutter Edit 2

Designed by GRAMMY-winning producer and composer BT for use in his own music, not only did Stutter Edit let users make complex edits easily but it also offered a variety of effects with parameters that could change in time with the rhythm of the edit. This allowed users to recreate truly wild, unique, and professional sound-design touches to their music.

BT never stopped improving on the concept, and iZotope is pleased to partner together once again to bring you Stutter Edit 2. Redesigned and reimagined for the demands of the modern workflow, Stutter Edit 2 can easily transform sounds into rhythmic gestures, add subtle “ear candy” to a mix, and can create synth-like pads and soundscapes. Stutter Edit 2 (Affiliate Link) combines iZotope’s user-friendly setup and workflow with BT’s patented brand of audio and rhythmic experimentation to bring you this new science lab of sound design toys.

Stutter Edit 2 (Affiliate Link) lets you produce the famous “stutter” editing effect with one button to slice and dice your samples, tracks, and mixes. Ignite rhythmic gestures, sweeping filters, glitchy effects, or everything at once. Instantly create complex rhythmic effects with the new Auto mode. Fire off effects on the fly or use a MIDI controller to access dozens of gestures with the touch of a key.

New effects and options

Izotope added a full chain of effects modules to Stutter Edit 2 (Affiliate Link), far beyond what was available in the original. There are now 11 effects in total, and they have all been upgraded with new DSP and adjustable parameters for a mind-boggling level of sound design potential. Four new effects have been added: a Chorus, Comb, and Limiter module, an upgraded multiband Distort module with 18 selectable distortion models, and a “secret sauce” reverb from BT’s personal collection. You can reorder any module in the chain, turn them on and off, and add Modifiers (TVMs) to any parameter to create an infinite variety of sounds and effects.

Stutter Edit 2 (Affiliate Link) introduces Time-Variant Modifiers (TVMs), which can be applied to any effect in the plug-in. When we say “any effect”, Izotope talking about every knob, slider, and adjustable parameter within Stutter Edit 2. Every. Single. One.

The Curve Editor in Stutter Edit 2

Like Stutter Edit, every parameter in Stutter Edit 2 has a Range that tells that parameter to “move” along with your gesture. In Stutter Edit 2, the range moves on a curve. Rather than having parameters simply oscillate back and forth, you can have effects slowly sweep in intensity, ping-pong between order and chaos, or just behave randomly. Working with the new Curve Editor is easy: just click the blue bar on any parameter in Stutter Edit 2 and you will see its unique curve. Draw in a curve of your own, or choose from 12 premade curves.

More gestures, more banks, more inspiration

More of everything, really. Izotope could have stopped at the new effects. Izotope could have given you an innovative new stuttering workflow and called it a day. But Izotope couldn’t go over the top and make a ton of inspiring new gestures and presets for this thing to get your ideas started, right? In making Stutter Edit 2, iZotope and BT joined forces to create hundreds of new gestures for different genres and use cases, from trap to cinema to experimental soundscapes.

BT brings his patented brand of experimental sound design into the mix with banks tailor-made for cinematic sound design. Just one gesture can have any number of different sounds depending on the audio you use it on, and you can customize and save your own banks and gestures with an easy-to-use Manager.

Auto Mode and MIDI Mode

Like the original, Stutter Edit 2 (Affiliate Link) is a “playable effect”, meaning it needs a command to play back on your track. With the new Auto mode, you no longer need to spend time setting up MIDI in your DAW to make this happen. Just load Stutter Edit, engage Auto mode, choose any gesture, and press play in your session to start hearing effects immediately.

Auto mode is great for quickly auditioning gestures to find the ones you like. You won’t have to worry about pressing or holding keys, and can instead concentrate on designing and customizing your gesture. Auto mode also makes Stutter Edit 2 far easier to use in mixing sessions, since you’ll have the freedom to place it on sends and returns without worrying about MIDI signals and routing.

But if you want to use a keyboard, (and you will), Izotope made MIDI setup easier as well. Now Stutter Edit 2 (Affiliate Link) will display a help screen with step-by-step instructions and screenshots to guide you through the process. Since this is different for every DAW, Stutter Edit 2 displays unique help instructions for supported hosts.
