Comparing Pianos from Galaxy Instruments and 8DIO
Comparing different Pianos from Galaxy Instruments with two sampled Steinway pianos from 8DIO.
My findings are that the Galaxy Instruments pianos are very playable. The overall sound of Galaxy II pianos is very moving, you do hear the effort that went into recording those pianos.
Vienna Grand Imperial is powerful, dark, and full-bodied. The 1929 German Baby Grand is cozier, intimate, and has a more singing tone. Galaxy Steinway has the purest sounding tone fits any musical style, many used it for pop and jazz.
The 8DIO pianos come with a different tone and compliment perfect each other. 8Dio’s 1928 Legacy Steinway Scoring Piano is dark and warm. 1969 Steinway (Model D) Concert Grand Piano is brighter, lively.
Pianos used:
- Vintage D
- Vienna Grand
- Galaxy Steinway
- 1929 German Baby Grand
- 1928 Legacy Steinway Scoring Piano
- 1969 Steinway (Model D) Concert Grand Piano

Review of MYSTERIA by Galaxy Instruments & Native Instruments
MYSTERIA a Cinematic Vocal Textures Aleatory Instrument
We are reviewing MYSTERIA today, this release is a unique aleatory instrument for media scoring where you need that dark fearful tension. If you are familiar with Thrill, MYSTERIA follows the same concept, this time with voices.
Aleatory Techniques
The use of random elements in the production process, especially that of art or media, is known as aleatoricism. Aleatoricism is frequently found in music, visual art, and literature.
Aleatoricism is the incorporation of chance into the creative process. Aleatoric music, for example, is composed using random elements such as dice rolls or the flipping of a coin. While some may see this as a subversion of traditional composition methods, aleatoric music can actually produce surprisingly complex and beautiful results.
In art, aleatoric often takes the form of collage, where found objects are combined to create new and interesting compositions. And in literature, aleatoric poetry relies on chance to determine its form and content. By incorporating change into their work, artists and writers can let go of control and allow new and unexpected possibilities to emerge. In a world that is often dominated by planning and predictability, aleatoric offers a refreshing way to create.
An aleatory instrument is a musical instrument that uses randomness as part of its performance. The most common type of aleatory instrument is the player piano, which uses a roll of the perforated paper to control the movement of the keys.
Aleatoric music is also often written for traditional instruments, such as the violin or piano. In this case, the performer may be instructed to use a specific technique, such as bowing randomly or playing notes at random intervals. The use of aleatory elements can add an element of chance to the performance, making it more exciting for both the performer and the audience.
Though sometimes seen as overly experimental, aleatory music has been found in works by some of the most respected composers, such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Alban Berg.
MYSTERIA was created in collaboration with two long-time partners, Galaxy Instruments and Native Instruments. Galaxy Instruments is famous for its proven mastery of quality sampling, innovative control, and a unique approach to building tools for composers, producers, and musicians.
Previous collaborations of Galaxy Instruments and Native Instruments include THRILL, NOIRE, THE GIANT, UNA CORDA, RISE, AND HIT, and THE DEFINITIVE PIANO COLLECTION. As the follow-up to the cinematic performance instrument Thrill, Mysteria’s content centers on choirs and voices to communicate complex moods, vibes, and emotions.
The 29 GB sound library provides more than 800 sound sources from three choirs recorded in Bratislava and Cologne: a large symphonic choir (divided into male and female choirs), a chamber choir, and an intimate sounding vocal quartet from the field of new music.
MYSTERIA is based on three choirs and aleatory sound design and offers an intuitively playable interface with an X-Y pad with which you can blend between complex sound layers and dynamic effects. MYSTERIA is a one-of-a-kind cinematic instrument that harnesses the human voice’s unique ability to convey emotion. Almost entirely voice-based, it’s capable of everything from angelic dreamscapes to arcane textures.
Review of MYSTERIA by Galaxy Instruments & Native Instruments
Galaxy Instruments has taken the very successful Thrill library concept and launched a library with an extensive focus on choir, voice, and vocal clusters. Aleatoric textures and clusters have been recorded with a large 48-singers choir, a chamber choir, and a quartet specialized in the contemporary choir repertoire.
MYSTERIA unites sources from three meticulously-recorded choirs with in-depth aleatoric sound design to form the only performance instrument that places arcane textures, haunting atmospheres, and enchanting moods from the subtle to the sublime, within a single playable interface.
By combining the raw sonic power of live choirs with the unmatched flexibility of modern software synthesis, MYSTERIA gives you the tools you need to create truly unique sounds. From ethereal pads to angelic voices, MYSTERIA is perfect for anyone who wants to add a touch of magic to their music.
MYSTERIA and also Thrill are an aleatoric library. What makes this one so special is that it can be played as an instrument. There are some aleatoric libraries available from other producers.
Excessively Vibrant Textures and Sound Beds
Other libraries do offer elements that can be “one-shot” played, while MYSTERIA as an aleatoric instrument can be played and changed using the X/Y pad for the intensity, emotion, and mood. All while you playing at the end four different instruments or choirs. This produces a tense ambiance and gives you these extremely emotional textures and sound beds.
There’s something about extremely emotional textures and sound beds that just resonate with me on a deep level. They evoke the deepest parts of my soul and make me feel things that I sometimes can’t put into words.
When I hear these types of songs, it’s like the whole world disappears and I’m transported to another place entirely. There’s a sense of peace and calm that comes over me, and I can just feel all of my worries melting away. It’s like nothing else matters in those moments except for the music. It’s one of the most beautiful things in the world, and I’m so grateful that we have this type of music to enjoy.
As any film composer knows, creating the perfect atmosphere is essential to scoring a successful movie. Luckily, with today’s technology, it’s easier than ever to manipulate atmospheres and tonal clusters to create the perfect soundscape for any scene.
By playing with different textures and sounds, composers can create an endless variety of moods and mattes to fit any scene. And best of all, with real-time manipulation, these atmospheres and soundtracks can be made to evolve and change as the scene progresses.
Whether it’s an anxious thriller or a heartwarming drama, the right atmosphere can make all the difference. So next time you’re scoring a film, don’t forget the power of atmospheres and tonal clusters. With a little creativity, you can create magic.
The Cluster Designer from MYSTERIA is an exciting engine. Clusters are tonally playable layers of individual voices that can be combined, shifted, or seamlessly blended for a wide range of cinematic effects.
Up to eight individually editable Voices can be tuned and panned when playing. The Y-axis enables switching between clusters, with granular control over the tonal results.
Playable Instrument
Using MYSTERIA on a scene you get a playable instrument that allows you to play textures that are unique compared to many other libraries that give your textures and sound beds.
You can create instant creepy tones that are playable and the exceptional MYSTERIA instruments and blending 4 sound sources. With another aleatoric music library, you can play a tone and it does not move, when you need to change the tone to follow the mood of the scene MYSTERIA gives you the option to blend a sound that is based on four different moods or variations of a single one.
Aleatoric libraries are a part of the favorite tools for any trailer and tv composers who require to supplement tension to their creations. Of course, the obvious purpose of MYSTERIA is in horror and thriller films.
Any composer and sound designer who works professionally on movies that need tension can easily create it with this aleatoric library. MYSTERIA will add to their range of libraries as the business return will be instant on the first project where they can use this very special aleatoric instrument.

Every detail can be adjusted and personalized manually, or sounds can be created by chance using the randomize feature. The sample sets and modulations are performed together using an XYPad, for a completely new way to design and play cinematic textures and builds
MYSTERIA Vocal Sources
While MYSTERIA uses vocal sources, it is not strictly a musical instrument but more of a performance effect engine. Most Snapshots will not even use the note information from your MIDI keyboard; the MIDI is only used to trigger the sound.
XY-Pad
The power of MYSTERIA comes from the XY-Pad – with this you can control the tension and drama of the sound, as well as a morph between the two halves of the sound. The concept is that you hold a sound and then adjust it with the XY-Pad in sync with your project. Because of this, MYSTERIA is a tool well suited to scoring film, television, and video games.
MYSTERIA’s sound engine is based on blending two identical sound generators. These generators are called Layers and contain a combination of samples and effects. Most control pages in the instrument are divided into three sections with the XY-Pad in the center, and the controls for Layer A and Layer B to the left and right of the pad.
