New HISSandaROAR Ambience Library

A month back Tim Prebble (HISSandaROAR) woke up on a Monday morning with plans to head out recording FOLIAGE stalled by pouring rain! Rain that the weather forecast forgot to mention… But rather than be frustrated Tim decided to experiment with unusual methods for recording rain, starting with the configuration above: capturing four discrete channels of granular metal rain. Sitting inside listening on headphones while a shower passed soon became the best Monday morning he had in ages! So Tim began stalking the local rain radar and for the following days and weeks every time he saw rain approaching, Tim would roll his recorder on a different setup of props. Tim experimented with various props and configurations, from metal sheets to plastic containers, and even a custom-made rain catcher. Each setup produced its own unique rain sound, with some resembling the patter of a gentle drizzle and others sounding like a full-blown downpour. Tim quickly found himself engrossed in the process, and before he knew it, he had captured enough rain recordings to fill a small library. Excited by the potential of his new collection, Tim shared his recordings with a few close friends in the fallout music group, and the response was overwhelmingly positive.

Of course, Tin progressed from resonant vintage milk cans, trash can & copper bin to two water phones, Tank Resonator, 44 Gallon drum, three tuned steel pan drums, pots and pans, buckets, a kettle, and a biscuit tin… And then switched from my MKH8040 and 8020 mics to a set of six Usi Pro mics which he first used inside six vintage gas tanks, and then in two sets of six wind chime pipes. For more ‘normal’ purposes Tim also recorded quad rain in a tin shed and six-channel rain in my greenhouse, where my mics (8040/8020/70×2) got to hang out with my avocado, yuzu, tamarillo, etc…

In most cases, Tim would leave the setup recording for 30-60 minutes, which enabled him to later make selections to provide a range of intensities, from gentle steady rain to passing downpours. After RX spot replacing any errant birdsong, the result is a strangely beguiling collection of characterful interior rain.
