3 Delays You’ll Actually Use Released
Arturia launched new delay plugins. The 3 delays modeled in this bundle cover the most popular, and best sounding varieties of the effect: vintage tape delay, analog “bucket brigade” echo, and a cutting edge digital design. Made to inspire, Arturia recreated 2 of the most famous hardware analog delays ever made and developed their own powerful, versatile digital to give you the best echo processing available.

3 Delays You’ll Actually Use has its promise set out in its name. Musicians and producers will be able to stop auditioning dozens of different effects, trying to find the right sound, and enjoy the legendary tone and awesome features in one simple bundle. Covering all bases, Arturia has modeled 2 famous delay effects and developed their own next-gen modern delay. Saturated tape tones, lo-fi BBD feedback, and synth-style modulating digital delay. It’s all here.
Using their exclusive TAE and Phi modeling technologies – the same know-how behind their multi-award winning V Collection series of synths and keyboards (See our V Collection 7 Review) – Arturia have revamped these legendary effects and created an exciting, 21st-century delay.
Delay TAPE-201
Delay Tape-201 is modeled after an iconic hardware unit from the 1970s. This unit employed a closed loop of tape with several sequential playheads to create lush rhythmic echo effects. More than just a static effect, the hardware could be played like an instrument and would go on to play a central role in music genres like dub and experimental. Arturia’s Tape-201 builds on this legacy by providing you with a realistic recreation of the original hardware, while adding new features that modern producers and musicians will appreciate.

History of tape looping
The use of looping sections of music was originally pioneered in the 1940s by music concrete artist Pierre Schaefer, who used a closed groove phonograph disc to create repeating segments of sound. As magnetic audiotape technology became available, this technique could be replicated by cutting a section of recorded audiotape and splicing the ends to create a continuous loop of tape. This section of looped tape would then be played back to create a looping sound, whose pitch and periodicity could be controlled by changing the speed of the playback machine.
Tape looping became more widely used in the 1950s and 1960s by contemporary composers such as Karlheinz Stockhausen, Steve Reich and Terry Riley, who would often play multiple tape loops of different lengths simultaneously to create patterns and rhythms. By the 1960s, the use of tape loops had also begun to permeate popular music. The effect was heavily used by Jamaican dub music artists, such as King Tubby and Sylvan Morris, and became a distinguishing characteristic of the genre. Tape looping was also used by popular artists, such as the Beatles, who used the technique on some of their later works, like “Revolution 9”, which is heavily based on tape loops.
Tape Echo
Before the advent of modern analog and digital delays, this type of effect would be achieved by routing an audio signal to an auxiliary tape machine, then feeding the signal from that machine’s playback head back into the mix. The time it took for the signal to be recorded onto the tape then played back into the mix from the playback head would introduce a delay to the original signal. Engineers could adjust the delay time by slowing down or speeding up the tape mechanism or would feed the playback signal back into the machine to achieve multiple echoes. The effect gained so much popularity that hardware manufacturers took note and began producing specialized tape devices to handle this task.

Delay MEMORY BRIGADE
Arturia created Delay Memory-Brigade so that it’s easy to understand and use right away, yet powerful and flexible for creating a wide range of different delay effects and colors.
The legendary “memory” BBD guitar pedal has been reimagined as a plug-in for your DAW. Lo-fi, filtered, dark tone with a huge scope for feedback. This delay will give you “the edge”.
Memory-Brigade is modeled after an iconic and highly sought-after bucket brigade delay pedal from the 1970s. This unit was one of the first to offer warm, tape-like echo in a small pedal form. Arturia’s Memory-Brigade builds on this legacy by providing you with a realistic recreation of the original hardware, while adding new features that modern producers and musicians will appreciate.
Bucket-Brigade Device (BBD)
BBD stands for the bucket-brigade device. The name comes from the world of firefighting, where firefighters would pass buckets of water from one person to another to extinguish a fire. This was called a bucket brigade. Similarly, a BBD is a type of circuit that passes an analog signal through a series of capacitors to achieve delayed echoes. Each capacitor can be thought of as a “bucket”. Once it fills up, the signal passes to the next capacitor. This introduces a delay to the original signal. The delay time can be changed by varying the speed at which capacitors fill up. A signal is passed from one capacitor “bucket” to the next, the original signal gradually degrades, resulting in noise and distortion. Manufacturers had to account for this by filtering the signal heavily on the way into the delay circuit, and on the way out. This gave these types of delay circuits a characteristically warm, dark sound that would blend well behind the original signal.

- 3 different Delay Types – M/S, L/R, ping-pong
- Processes audio in stereo, instead of mono
- Adjustable BBD size that allows longer delay times
- Run multiple instances with different settings
- Automate effect settings from your DAW
- LFO for automated modulation of effect parameters
- Envelope Follower for modulating effect parameters via amplitude of the incoming signal
- Easy storage and recall of effect settings
