Thorn by Dmitry Sches Review
Thorn is a very intuitive and rich software synth from the same company who brought us Tantra. Thorn due to his sounds and potentialities is part of the high-end soft synths family. Dmitry Sches did send a review copy with no strings attached.
Installation
Thorn is a VST 2.4 or VST 3 or AU or AAX plugin for Windows and MAC. Pls, see here for current technical requirements. You can install a demo version, which is 100% identical to the full version, except for one limitation. In the Demo Version, a noise sample will be played once in 90 seconds.
Sound
Thorn measure a twisted group of harmonics mixed (three Harmonic Oscillators) with spectral analysis and included tools and filter to produce not heard sounds. Thorn’s heavy, hyper-real tone is primarily based on the included oscillators. The synth is full of extensive and available effects. It consists of an astonishing Glitch Sequencer module which produces stunning vibes.

Serene worlds contain many exceptional beautiful pads, atmospheres, and soundscapes that sound genuinely unique thanks to Thorn’s additive/wavetable properties combined with the first harmonic oscillator – thorn is capable of some amazingly beautiful sounds.
Nearly 80 original sound-sources were created just for using this oscillator, using granular methods, and layering multiple sounds with real-world recording to aid the atmospheric ambiance of the patches, including bamboo rain sticks, village gongs, synthesized choir samples, flutes, wind chimes, glistening shimmers, etc.
Some of the noise oscillators could have as many as five layers blended into one source. The goal was to subtlety aid the beauty and power of thorns beautiful, unique sound, without ever making it.
User interface & Usability
Thorn Interface is well designed and notably fast and overall an intuitive user interface. Thorn synthesizer that was designed to produce outstanding sound quickly – even when you are just starting to use a synth. For advanced and more experience producer Thorn provides advanced sonic control to shape the sound.
All controls in the interface and grouped in sections and easily accessible. As you can see in the image above the setup of the needed tools is clean and sorted.
